Butterfly Quilt

This is the butterfly quilt that my husband brought home night before last. His aunt made it, although we don't know when. My mother-in-law had it for many years. It is hand-quilted and it looks to me as if the butterflies are hand appliqued on with a blanket stitch. She did really beautiful work.

You can see the blanket stitch better in this close-up. She also did some beautiful hand quilting in between the blocks and on the border, but it is impossible for our camera to pick up those details.

The batting is so thin, I think it might be a piece of flannel.

This is like a little piece of spring time here at the beginning of winter.

Yesterday I went to a little craft sale at the home of a local weaver and ran into a couple of teacher friends whom I haven't seen for a long time. It was fun to catch up while I looked through all the crafts. I found a couple of little Christmas presents which I won't go into here as it might spoil a surprise or two!

I also went to the quilt shop and had the owner double check my math for the fabric amounts for the borders on our guild mystery quilt. I love coming up with the design and directions for the quilt, but I when I have to figure yardage, my eyes start to roll back in my head. Interestingly, she had one of those fabric calculators, and after we had figured out the yardage the good old fashioned way with a quick sketch and lots of numbers, she fed the dimensions into the calculator and it spit out the same yardage as we had figured! We just had to add on a little bit for insurance. I always wondered if those calculators worked. EQ will figure yardage, but it always assumes that borders will be made with length of fabric pieces, rather than width, so it over-estimates, in my opinion.

On the home front, I got some more quilting done on the log cabin table mat. It is really going quickly.

Thanks Diana! I will make sure to post pictures when my browns quilt is done. I am thinking of giving it to my dad when he retires in a few years. I was planning on putting it in a basket with Geritol, reading glasses, super strength Polydent, and some Depends. I hope it makes him laugh some.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I love this quilt from your Aunt. Very cute. I have not seen butterflies in this arrangement. Nice.

Come visit again...

Your butterfly quilt is so beautiful. And it is a special treasure since it was your aunt who made it.
